Mission Statement

Residents in the area recognized the need for modern fire protection and set about organizing a volunteer fire department in 1953. In 1954, the Benton County Fire Protection District #4 was formally incorporated and recognized by the State of Washington. Currently, Benton Co. F.D. #4 provides fire protection and emergency medical response to 52 square miles that encompasses the City of West Richland and surrounding rural unincorporated areas. The department is supported through tax levies, private donations and grant funding. In the early days, the department was comprised of all volunteers. In the early 1970s, Benton Co. F.D. #4, started providing an additional service to the citizens of the district by training and fielding emergency medical first responders. In 1993, Benton Co. F.D. #4 recognized the need for full-time staffing and hired their first fulltime paid firefighters. Over the years, Benton Co. F.D. #4 has expanded operations and locations to provide services for the ever increasing population and commerce in and around the City of West Richland. Presently, Benton Co. F.D. #4 provides pre-hospital care in the form of advanced life support emergency medical response. The department also provides fire protection and rescue response from two stations, with a roster staffed by career firefighter-paramedics, resident intern firefighters, volunteer firefighters and support personnel. Benton Co. F.D. #4 also provides mutual aid assistance to neighboring fire districts as well as the cities of Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Site, the Washington Department of Natural Resources and federal land management agencies.
